"The body's defense against itself"--the movie

You read that correctly, it's finally here! What we've all been waiting for--Thompson-Spires "The body's defense against itself" the movie! The words of this extraordinary story have finally lifted off the pages for us all to enjoy. Stay tuned for an exclusive interview with the director who put this all together!

Interviewer: What a beautiful day to be discussing the rebirth of an amazing story! Tell me, how are you today?

Director: Well, I must say I am glad to be here! I can't believe we already made it this far, it feels like only yesterday I was reading Thompson-Spires book "The heads of the colored people."
Interviewer: Well that's nice. If you don't mind, why don't we get right into it? There are a lot of people out there, myself included, wondering about the creative choices and development of this movie. Would you mind walking us through your thought process and explaining the significance of decisions such as character and actor or actress pairing?
Director: Why of course! I would be delighted to share my creative design behind it all. What would you like to know first?

Interviewer: Firstly, we must discuss the star of the show--Willow Smith as Fatima. What singled out Willow from the rest for this role?

Director: Starting with the easy questions I see. When I think about Fatima, Willow is the obvious choice and embodiment I want to see. She is a strong, independent woman who seems to have her life put together. I think this is an important aspect to add to the role of Fatima, who we know struggles with internal turmoil. It speaks to the reality and commonality of mental health issues and childhood traumas. With or without mental health issues, to put Willow in this role enforces the idea that nobody is perfect, and shows girls who look up to her that it's okay to not be okay. Willow is also slender and beautiful which is exactly how I imagine Fatima. Fatima doesn't see the beauty in herself and I believe it adds depth to the story to portray her as nothing less than exquisite.

Interviewer: Beautifully put! An aspect of women empowerment is always needed in the media and I couldn't ask for any more out of this character. I cannot wait to see Willow represent Fatima in such a beautiful way! The next character we are all wondering about is Christina. Can you tell me a little bit more about the reasoning behind your choice of her actress--Octavia Spencer?

Director: Firstly, Octavia Spencer is an amazing actress. She has made great strides towards racial and gender equality in American television and that's exactly what I am looking for here. We see Christina's character mostly being played as a child, with her adult character only mentioned in passing. However, I think Octavia has a youthful look about her and would fit right into the role required of her. Similarly to Fatima, Christina struggles with her identity and insecurities as a child but displays it in a different way. She later grows into an accomplished doctor which is the key aspect I want to play on here. Even though she struggled as a child, she eventually made it out okay which is one of the concepts I want my viewers to take away from her character.

Interviewer: Wow, yet another amazing choice for this movie. I can see what you mean about Christina's insecurities, and can't wait to see what Octavia adds to this role! My next question regards the characters with more minor roles in the story. Can you explain your creative choices in these roles?

Director: I would love to! There are three more characters that play a role in this story: the yoga instructor named Biniam, Fatima's childhood friend named Emily, and the new, unnamed, black lady in the yoga studio. Firstly, I have decided to cast Alex Landi as Biniam. In the story, he is described by Fatima as pretty and possibly gay. Alex Landi is a phenomenal person for this role because that is exactly what he played in the infamous "Grey's Anatomy," and I believe he was exceptional in that role. Next, I have decided to cast Yvette Nicole Brown as the unnamed new girl in the yoga studio. She has soft, warm features which I think will add depth to Fatima's thoughts of her by showing the viewer both Fatima's perception and reality. Lastly, I have decided to cast Sadie Sink as Emily. She looks exactly how I would imagine Emily would and she is most known for her strong female role in the show, "Stranger Things."

Interviewer: Wow, I can't wait to see what happens with this movie with so many powerful women on set. If I may say so myself, it sounds like this movie will have a greater impact than we could imagine! Past the characters, I would like to delve deeper into the feel of this movie. Do you have any comments on the setting or soundtrack in the movie?

Director: Yes, we are trying to recreate the setting of the story as closely as we can. As for the music, we will be using a soundtrack similar to the one used in the movie "Home." Rihanna will similarly be the only artist on the track. For me, she is the icing-on-the-cake, so to speak, for this movie. She is an idol to girls and women everywhere and I believe you cannot make a movie focusing on woman empowerment without her.

Interviewer: I would have to agree with you, Rihanna is the icing on the cake for most everyone. That is all the questions I have for you today. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your movie! With the meaning behind all of these choices understood, this piece of art has been successfully turned into a masterpiece. I, along with the rest of the world, are on the edge of our seats waiting to see what your rendition of "The body's defense against itself" by Thompson-Spires gives us. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and time with us.

Director: Thank you for your nice words! I too can't wait to share this with you all.

Interviewer: Well, we all have something in common now then. Haha! Have a nice rest of your day!

Director: Thank you, you too!

Interviewer: Until next time!
